Build a fence -- help a pony club friend in need

Dear Pony Club Families,

My longtime friend and USPC fellow officer, Sue Lavenz, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In preparing for the changes in her life, she is reducing her herd of horses. Because of that, they will no longer need to lease the additional 30 acres from their neighbors.

When I asked what I could do to help her, she did not want a benefit. She wanted a fence.

After they no longer lease the 30 acres, they will need a fence to run along their property line to keep their horses on their property.

This is where you come in. If you know some people that can help us get Sue’s fence done, can you please spare a few hours to help out? I looked the weather report, Saturday is sunny but Sunday is rainy so I think we should try and do the fence this Saturday, November 1. Sue’s address is 9465 Norris Lake Rd NW, Elk River, MN.

Can’t dig a fence? Then could you help with bringing food for the crew? Lending us post hole diggers or tools?

Let’s plan to start at around 8 am – join us when you can make it. If you are coming and are helping in some way, let me know so we can organize the troops.

Thank you,
Beth Whillock

M E E T   T H E   I N S T R U C T O R S . . . . .

Maddie: Mounted Instructor
C3 Dressage Specialty & HB from Croixside Pony Club
I have been riding horses since I was 8 years old and have been in Pony Club for 8 years.  I primarily focus on dressage training but also enjoy improving my stadium/cross country skills and love a great trail ride!  My horse is an 12 year old Welsh/Holsteiner pony whom I have been with for 5 years and have taken up to Third Level in dressage. In 2014, I was accepted into the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation’s Trainer’s Challenge.  So this year I will be training a young Arabian mare to present at the MHARF silent auction in September.  In addition to riding, I enjoy playing the piano, working at a local animal hospital, volunteering for a wildlife rehab center and spending time with family, friends, my dog and cat.

Anna: Mounted Instructor
C3 Traditional from Lead Hound Pony Club
Before going to college I was a member of Lead Hound Pony Club. I joined in 1998 when I was five and got my C3 when I was fifteen. Since then I have been an examiner and taught many certification preps. I really love teaching, and especially like mentoring other PC members as they begin teaching. I am an eventer and work primarily with young horses moving up the levels. I am a junior UW-River Falls studying Biology and Education. I was on the USPC International Tetrathlon team in 2011 and traveled to compete in England and Ireland. I also do a lot of skijoring for fun and have done a bit of mounted games.

Anessa: Team Leader & Instructor
C2 Horse Management from Kimberwicke Pony Club
I am a C2-Horse Management-rated pony clubber who has been in the organization for the past ten years.  I have in that time dabbled in several disciplines, including spending a few years vaulting, but am busy at college and do my best to keep up with learning about horse care and management.  I enjoy Quiz and have competed regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Rachel: Team Leader & Instructor
C2 Traditional from Rising Sun Pony Club
I am 17 and plan to take my HB this summer.  I first joined pony club when I was 8 years old.  I’ve been an instructor at D Retreat and have attended many pony club events since joining.  My horse, Maddy, is a 15.3 hand blue roan American Warmblood mare.  We are qualified to compete at Championships this summer in Eventing.

Charlotte: Team Leader & Instructor
HB from Lead Hound Pony Club
I've been in Pony Club for four years now. I'll be turning 18 this summer––and I've been riding since I was 6. I have an eight year old Straight Egyptian Al Khamsa Arabian gelding named ND Khedar Fateen, whom I've owned since he was two! I started and trained him myself, but because I'm so busy with AP/IB/PSEO courses at school, we've taken a break from competition. I still ride everyday: We love to fox-hunt with Long Lake Hounds, trail ride, swim, and just gallop around.

Early bird registration ends May 16 -- don't delay and send in your registration and payment soon!

M E E T   T H E   D   C A M P   I N S T R U C T O R S . . . .

Bethany: Mounted Instructor
C2 Traditional & HB from Canterbury Pony Club
I have been riding horses since I was three years old. I started in Pony Club at six. I have been to Nationals twice in Tetratholon, once in Games, and once in Polocrosse. Just after my last Nationals I achieved an H-B rating. I am currently and unfortunately horse-less due to college/student loans. I am very excited to be able to share my knowledge with young riders!

Marta:  Team Mentor & Instructor
C1 Horse Management from Rolling Hills Riding Center
I'm a C1 pony clubber at Rolling Hills Riding Center. I have been riding since I was four and in Pony Club since I was 12. I started out riding with basic lessons, then started competing in Eventing. About two years ago I switched to show jumping when I got my current horse. Her name is Bella, and she's a Warmblood/Thoroughbred mare who LOVES to jump. About a year ago we had a bit of a setback, I fractured my spine & couldn't compete at all last season. We are looking forward to getting back in the game with PC ratings & jumper shows this summer!

Kyle: Team Mentor & Instructor
C2 Traditional from Rising Sun Pony Club

I am 16 and plan to take my HB and C3 Traditional Certifications this summer.  I joined pony club when I was 7 years old.  I’ve participated in multiple pony club events over the years including Quiz, C-Retreat, and recently I taught at D-Retreat.  I ride Sadie B Swooning.  She’s a 15.3 hand bay Quarter Horse mare.  Sadie and I are qualified to compete at Championships this summer in Eventing.

Holly:  Mounted Instructor
C3 Traditional from Praire's Edge Pony Club
I absolutely love horses and have been riding since I was 8. I joined Prairie's Edge Pony Club when I was 14 and fell in love with Eventing. I have an 18 year old thoroughbred, Asa, who lives with me in Michigan, and I am lucky enough to have a few other horses to work with when I can fit more riding in! In addition to riding, I play Ultimate (Frisbee), cross country ski, and love cooking, reading, and riding my bike.

Mara: Team Mentor & Instructor
C2 Horse Management from Kimberwicke Pony Club
Mara has been in Pony Club for about 12 years.  Her favorite event is Quiz.  She has a cute Arabian named Nikker at her parents' house.  Mara's superpowers include being a nerd and hanging bridles on her head in semi-public places.

Important information regarding horse health in Minnesota

UPDATE: From the MN Board of Animal Health- March 20, 2014

There have been reports from equine practitioners in parts of eastern MN and western WI of horses with acute neurologic signs. Two of the affected horses have tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infection (non-neuropathogenic strain). The two positive cases were horses on the same premises in Chisago County, Minnesota. Diagnostic tests are pending on additional horses.

Equine herpesvirus-1 is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory disease, abortion, and intermittent outbreaks of neurologic disease in horses. Symptoms that should alert horse owners to the possibility of neurologic EHV-1 infection include fever, weakness and incoordination, and urine dribbling or inability to urinate. Horses with these symptoms should be examined immediately by a veterinarian. Suspect horses should be isolated from healthy horses and tested for EHV-1.

The neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1 is a reportable disease in Minnesota. Test results that are confirmed to be the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1 must be forwarded to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

The University of Minnesota Center for Animal Health and Food Safety recommends that horses with a fever and symptoms of contagious respiratory infection should be kept at home and not taken to shows, clinics or public trail rides. Horse owners should also be aware that transportation of horses to competitions, shows and clinics may increase the risk of exposure to infectious organisms. Owners of affected horses should wash and disinfect their hands and change their clothes before coming into contact with healthy horses to prevent the potential spread of these infectious organisms.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health will provide updates to the veterinary community as the situation evolves.
